General Info
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. It is not a man-made pollutant. It comes from the radioactive decay of Uranium, which is present in almost all states. Because it is radioactive, it has serious public health issues. The US EPA and most state agencies believe that is the number 2 cause of lung disease…behind cigarette smoking.
Measuring the concentration of Radon in indoor air is recommended for public health reasons. Moderately elevated Radon above the government warning level of 4 Pico curies per liter is only health risks if it is sustained for many years, but severely high Radon concentrations can be serious for shorter terms of exposure.
It has become de facto requirement in real estate sales in many parts of the country for a Radon test to be done prior to closing of a sale. Many realtors recommend that Radon problems be dealt with prior to showing a house for sale.
Our hall-mark as a leading Radon firm is informing buyers, sellers, and others concerned with the facts and prospects of solving Radon-related problems and saving real estate sales from failing over Radon issues that are easily solved at minimal cost.
Testing
Radiation Data was the first major Radon measurement firm in New Jersey, and remains today as the leading Radon testing business.
We serve about 60% of the home inspectors in New Jersey (and hundreds of other home inspectors nationwide) with Radon testing kits or with supervision of their use of portable Radon measuring instruments, including the required annual calibrations.
We have provided the state of NJ with about 50% of its entire database of radon tests.
Between 2003 and 2005 we tested almost 1/3 of the schools in NJ for Radon. This program was suspended in 2005 by the NJ Council of Local Mandates, before we could complete NJ school testing.
One of our affiliates has tested more than 4,000 classrooms in Connecticut, in a continuing program.
Mitigation
We have been providing Radon Mitigation systems in residential and non-residential structures since 1987. To date, we have installed more than 8,000 systems, and to our knowledge all of them are in good working order today. Our hallmark is good, neat workmanship, at a reasonable price. There are never unforeseen price increases in our business operation.
Training
We are approved by several states to offer initial and continuing education training in Radon techniques. In New Jersey we offer a 2-day course for new home inspectors seeking state certification to provide Radon testing. Our students have a remarkably high passing rate for the state exam.
We are approved to train and certify public school staffers to provide radon testing in classrooms and other school spaces. These trained school district persons can provide Radon testing at a substantial savings to the school districts.
We also provide services to Rutgers University School of Professional Continuing Education for industrial hygienists on radon as an indoor air quality (IAQ) issue.
Consulting
Our professional staff is available to provide expert advice on questions involving Radon. We have assisted homeowners, home buyers, lawyers, home inspectors, real estate agents, builders, contractors, engineers, code enforcement officials, architects, local and county health officers, environmental consulting and testing firms, school administrators, facilities managers and industrial hygienists. Many times, these consulting services are free of cost. The scope our work includes single dwellings, multi-home developments, town home complexes, commercial buildings, and educational buildings including dormitories, classroom structures and administrative buildings.
Preconstruction
In a number of communities in New Jersey it is a state requirement that Radon-prevention features be built into new construction plans…We are available to design and specify these provisions, or we can design and install them during construction. Our costs are very competitive.
Our Qualifications
We have had 20 years of experience in all phases of Radon measurement and mitigation, as well as design and consulting issues.
Our Affiliates
We have a family of home inspectors and others who rely on us for service and support. There are about 900 home inspectors in NJ who have Radon measurement certification, and about 550 of them are affiliated formally with us.
